In the mean time, here are a few tips for preparing your car for summer:
Air Conditioning Performance
Summer means heat, and your comfort depends on having an optimally running air conditioning system. If your system doesn’t seem to be cooling well, you should have it checked by a qualified technician. A routine check could catch problems such as a compressor malfunction, a broken compressor clutch or compressor switch, or a stuck valve. Low refrigeration level is a common concern after winter, when the A/C being not in use can lead to dried out seals that cause you to lose refrigerant more quickly.
Cooling System Maintenance
A summer breakdown due to overheating is something most of us have experienced, and it’s certainly no picnic. Your cooling system needs to be completely flushed about every 30,000 miles. Check your owner’s manual for a more specific recommendation. Periodically check or have your mechanic check the level of the coolant as well as the condition of the belts, hoses, and clamps to avoid being stranded in the heat.
Fluids and Filters Replacement
Be sure your oil change is up to date, and change oil, air, and fuel filters as necessary. Don’t forget to flush your transmission fluid! This is something that is often neglected, and can lead to one of the most costly repairs. Check your brake fluid as well, and remember to top off your winshield washer fluid too.
Tires and Brakes Condition
Have your technician check your brake pads and rotors to ensure they are in good condition, especially if you notice any issues such as weird noises, pulsating, or poor performance. Have your tires rotated and check them for air pressure and tread wear, including the spare. Uneven tread wear might mean you need an alignment.
The Little Things Are Important Too
Replace any worn wiper blades so you can be prepared for those summer storms. Check your lights and replace any burned out bulbs (It’s a great idea to have an extra set on hand in the glove box for the next time you need one). Give the headlight and tail-light lenses a cleaning so they are free from dirt and debris. Make (or buy) an emergency kit with a flashlight, first aid kit, and road flares. A few simple tools such as a couple of screwdrivers and pliers or a good multipurpose tool are handy items to add. Always keep a set of jumper cables, a spare tire, jack, and lug wrench in your vehicle. A spare blanket or space blanket are important additions as well.
With these things all taken care of, you can feel confident that your car is at it’s best, and freely enjoy your next road trip, outing, or simple day to day travel. Enjoy that beautiful spring weather. We hope to see you soon!
