Preparing your car for winter

The cold winter months are nearly upon us and to protect your car from damage, a few simple tricks that take no more than a few minutes to do will help ensure your car runs smoothly through harshest of weather…

  1. Check your battery

A big problem many drivers face over the winter is a flat battery. Cold temperatures and a reduced output are a nightmare cocktail for your car battery and when you add in increased use of the heater and lights, it places a huge amount of strain on it. Check your battery now to test its power output and replace if needed… Before you’re stranded on the side of the road!

  1. Add antifreeze

A great tip for these cold months is to add antifreeze to your engine coolant. A 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water is all you need and you’ll just need to top up the coolant to keep your car running smoothly through those cold months

  1. Keep it clean

Winter means darker nights, so make sure you keep your lights clean and clear so visibility does not become a problem. Similarly, regularly ensure your windscreen and wipers are washed so you’ll always be able to see the road ahead

  1. Have a breakdown kit

Not just a winter tip, but carrying a breakdown kit is a great way to help should the worst happen. For the colder winter months, think about adding a blanket, shovel, de-icer and snow grips… just in case you’re caught out!

  1. Keep your fluids topped up

Make sure you always keep your gas tank at least a quarter full in case of an unexpected emergency and also ensure your oil levels, brake fluid etc. are correct. If you’re unsure of how to do those, stop by our local garage for help.
